About The Industry
The Iowa Wine Industry is growing again. Before weather, prohibition, the
rise of king corn and farming practices hindered Iowa’s grape-growing
industry, the state was the sixth-largest producer of grapes in the country.
Today, the industry is coming back, with more than 340 vineyards raising
grapes on more than 700 acres.
Native Iowa wines can be found
in all parts of the state, in tasting rooms and wine cellars that offer fine
red, blush and white table wines; delicious dessert wines and exotic fruit
flavors. The state’s rolling hills and well drained soils offer a unique
terrain for the 30 varieties of wine grapes that are adapted to Iowa’s soils
and climates.
